Effects of Rubber Effluent on Soil Microbiological Properties and Growth of Maize (Zea mays)

The effects of rubber effluent on soil microbiological properties and growth of maize were investigated in pot experiment under screen-house conditions in a town situated in about 85 km North of Benin City and South of Auchi in Edo State in Nigeria. Composite soil samples were used in the experiment while rubber effluent (RUE) was used as a treatment. The treatment had five rates (0, 20, 40, 80, and 120 ml/kg soil) that were fitted into the completely randomized design (CRD) and replicated three times. The physical and chemical properties of the soil before the application of effluent and at eight weeks after the application were determined. The chemical properties of the effluent were also determined before the experiment as well as the bacteria and fungi populations. Maize variety ‘Suwan-1’ was used as a test crop. Results obtained showed that rubber effluent increased soil pH from 4.77 to 5.10 while the soil texture remained unchanged. Rubber effluent was (6.30) slightly acid. The rubber effluent had a significant influence on stem girth of the maize at two weeks after planting (WAP), leaf area at four WAP, and the number of leaves at eight WAP. The application of 40 ml/kg of RUE enhanced the tested growth parameters and showed a significant increment at eight WAP. The population of bacteria and fungi increased with increased levels of the effluent application. The bacteria and fungi that predominated were Bacillus, Penicillium and Candida species.
