Infrastructure Asset Mapping Application of Three-Dimensional Laser and Geospatial Technology

Mapping terrain features with advanced geospatial equipment and positioning systems are common in precision infrastructure expansion, urban constructions, asset tracking, and managing field operations. In urban application, geospatial 3-dimensional (3D) indoor maps could potentially benefit emergency response, maintenance, and resource management. In this study, geospatial 3D indoor mapping technology was demonstrated at California State University, Fresno Grosse Industrial Technology (IT) building. Mapping of indoor terrain with critical attributes has potential applications in planning besides maintenance and resource management. These attributes include fire service points, emergency exits, fire alarms, fire switches, smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers. Laser scanner and geospatial technology successfully mapped and post processed the geospatial 3D indoor map for all five floors and elevation of Grosse IT building. The technology used were Trimble GX laser scanner, global positioning system (GPS) receiver utilizing Trimble Access, Trimble Realworks, AutoCADĀ® 2011,
